Why Use Idioms?

Examiners love idioms. They show flair, cultural knowledge, and a command of the language beyond the textbook. Using just one or two correctly can push your writing into the top band.

1. Ser pan comido

  • Literal: To be eaten bread.
  • Meaning: To be a piece of cake (very easy).
  • Example: El examen fue pan comido. (The exam was a piece of cake.)

2. Estar como una cabra

  • Literal: To be like a goat.
  • Meaning: To be crazy.
  • Example: Mi profesor está como una cabra. (My teacher is crazy.)

3. Costar un ojo de la cara

  • Literal: To cost an eye of the face.
  • Meaning: To cost an arm and a leg (very expensive).
  • Example: El coche cuesta un ojo de la cara.

4. Tomar el pelo

  • Literal: To take the hair.
  • Meaning: To pull someone's leg (tease/joke).
  • Example: ¿Me estás tomando el pelo? (Are you kidding me?)

5. No tener pelos en la lengua

  • Literal: To not have hairs on the tongue.
  • Meaning: To speak one's mind / be blunt.
  • Example: Ella no tiene pelos en la lengua.

6. Estar hecho polvo

  • Meaning: To be exhausted / knackered.
  • Example: Después del partido, estaba hecho polvo.

7. Llover a cántaros

  • Meaning: To rain cats and dogs.
  • Example: Ayer llovía a cántaros.

8. Ponerse las pilas

  • Literal: To put in one's batteries.
  • Meaning: To get one's act together / work hard.

9. Ser uña y carne

  • Meaning: To be fingernail and flesh (inseparable friends).
